In an exclusive interview and photos, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie offer PEOPLE an intimate look at their growing family.
“It is chaos, but we are managing it and having a wonderful time,” Jolie tells PEOPLE of daily life at the Château Miraval in Provence, France, where the couple’s four older children — Maddox, 6, Pax, 4, Zahara, 3, and Shiloh, 2 — have been enjoying a summer of outdoor play (hide-and-seek is a favorite) on the château’s sprawling grounds.
Adds Pitt: “[It's] still a cuckoo’s nest.”
Fortunately, they already have some household helpers. “[Shiloh] and Z pick out [the twins'] clothes and help change and hold them,” says Jolie. “It’s sweet — they are little mommies.”

Actors Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie introduce their 3-week-old fraternal twins, Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline, in the latest issue of PEOPLE. Delivered by c-section on July 12th in France, the twins are featured in a 19-page spread in the magazine this week, along with older siblings Maddox Chivan, 6 ½, Pax Thien, 4 ½, Zahara Marley, 3 ½, and Shiloh Nouvel, 2.
Talking about their growing family, Angelina tells PEOPLE, “It is chaos, but we are managing it and having a wonderful time,” while Brad adds, “It’s still a cuckoo’s nest.”
The pair, who deny having fertility treatments — “If they had been conceived through IVF we would have been happy to discuss it” — shared that they were “in shock” when an ultrasound showed twins. “We could not stop laughing,” Angelina says. “We burst into hysterics,” explains Brad.
My sister had made a joke about twins literally the night before, because my grandparents and sis both had twins. Angie was on the table during the sonogram, and we were in hysterics. We didn’t see this one coming.
Brad described the naming process for the babies, as well as their looks and personalities, to o! and PEOPLE. While Marcheline is in honor of Angelina’s late mother, “the name Vivienne came to us early, as if she named herself. She has always been Viv.” Knox is named after his grandfather, while Léon “is a classic French name.”
I dare to say that Viv is proving to resemble Angie in spirit, attitude and physicality. She is quite elegant like her mother. And Knox, he’s a bit of me. He likes music like his dad. When he was born he looked like Putin!
The older siblings are extremely involved and love having new babies in the house, Brad and Angelina share. “This is Mad’s fourth and fifth time at becoming an older bro. He’s asking us when we can have more!,” Brad says. The girls are equally enthralled, Angelina reveals.
Shiloh calls them her babies. She and Zahara pick out their clothes, help change and hold them. It’s sweet, they are like little mommies.
Angelina, who is breastfeeding the twins, tells the magazine that keeping the babies on the same schedule has been a key to their success. When Knox and Viv are done nursing, the other children like to hold them, and also help with baths and changing.
A: They eat every three hours and I’m getting better at holding them both for breastfeeding at the same time, so that helps.
B: We try to get them to eat simultaneously for the sake of management, but it gets a little crowded at the bar!

Brad Pitts project for W actually sprang from a conversation Ws Creative Director Dennis Freedman had with another photographer, Bruce Weber. Freedman had been mulling over how to show anything new about one of the most photographed women in the world and Weber pointed out that, in his opinion, the best pictures of Elizabeth Taylor were taken by her third husband, Mike Todd.
I was surprised that Brad accepted the challenge, says Freedman of Pitts enthusiastic response. Last time we collaborated, I was struck by his sensitivity to the subtleties of photography. I knew that he possessed a highly tuned critical eye and would be very demanding of himself. Still, I wasnt prepared for the beauty and intimacy of the images he made of Angelina and the children.
For a hobbyist, Pitt certainly knew what he wanted. He was determined to shoot Jolie with Kodak Tech Pan film, which hasnt been manufactured for four years. Photo Editor Nadia Vellam located 40 rolls of the stuff on eBay, which a courier then hand-carried to Pitt in Provence, France, where the couple have been hiding out since June. A week later Pitt called; he needed more film. Vellams first source was tapped out. She finally tracked down a guy who offered her 30 rolls—in Israel. She then had mere hours to find someone in Tel Aviv who could get on a plane to France with the film that very day. Pitt also wanted to try a specialized film used in World War IIera movies. That was a no-go. One of Vellams sources instead recommended Ilford to achieve the same romantic, grainy quality. istant Bookings Editor Will Higdon-Sudow hopped a flight with it and made the handoff in a hotel lobby. The results speak for themselves.
